Last year, diver found a shipwreck in the Baltic Sea, just between Sweden and Finland. Among the wreckage, they discovered 146 bottles of Champagne, baring no label. Upon further testing, experts were able to confirm that 46 were from, none other than, the house of Veuve Cliqout. Perfectly stored on the sea floor (180ft), in ideal conditions, the Champagne was deemed still drinkable. Aaland wine expert Ella Gruessner Cromwell-Morgan, whom Ekstroem asked to taste the find, said it had not lost its fizz and was "absolutely fabulous". "I still have a glass in my fridge and keep going back every five minutes to take a breath of it. I have to pinch myself to believe it's real," she said.
Next week, on June 3, Acker Merrall & Condit with partner with Veuve Cliquot to host a historic auction. Two of the shipwrecked bottles will be up for bidding with a starting price of 10,000 Euro. I wish I could even afford to look at the bottles. Best of luck to all of the bidders!

$1.6 Million in wine stolen!
LONDON – Scotland Yard is searching for 1 million pounds ($1.6 million) worth of vintage wine stolen from an east London warehouse.
Police say thieves disabled alarms and security cameras before breaking into the warehouse on Sunday and using a forklift to load up about 400 cases of the precious cargo.
Some of the stolen wine belonged to private investors, one of whom has offered a 5,000 pound reward for the return of the stolen stock.
The Metropolitan Police appealed to the public for information, saying the stolen wine is rare and valuable and could be sold to private collectors or auction houses.
Six men were seen with what police said they believe are the three getaway vehicles. Police said two men have been arrested in connection with the burglary.

Courtney Benham Cabernet Sauvignon SLD 2006
Courtney Benham - Cabernet Sauvignon (SLD) - 2006 - (5/23/11)
Winemaker - Courtney Benham
This sub-brand of Martin Ray delivers aromas of Creme de Cassis, red fruit, and mint-like components that lift from the glass while being accompanied by a luscious, fruit-forward flavor with deep minerality. A rich wine with velvety, soft tannins, tremendous balance and a 15+ second finish. The 2006 is a great effort showing off traditional SLD characteristics that could mature over the next year or two. RH 90
